9-year-old Aurora girl killed in go-kart accident

An Aurora family is dealing with the sudden and shocking death of their nine-year-old daughter.

Taybor Duncan died Sunday morning in a go-kart accident during a competition in Grand Junction. She was driving in a Colorado Junior Karting Club race when her kart clipped a maintenance trailer attached to a four-wheeler which happened to be on the same track.

Her machine flipped several times.

"Total shock," said Jim Keesling, owner of The Track at Centennial, a karting facility.

"The nature of the whole industry itself has certain risks and it's just really hard to hear something this close."

Keesling said Duncan had been a regular at his track for the past year. He said the nine-year-old blonde was a diminutive tomboy and full of fire.

"Exciting, you know, fun, laughing, things didn't get her down," said Keesling. "From our experience, just a really good person."

Keesling said Duncan was also a good kart driver with a lot of promise.

"Very good at it," he said. "In a short period of time she became very quick and was smooth."

Keesling's son Fowler recently competed with Duncan at the karting nationals in Indianapolis.

"She was very careful," he said. "She has a great line... she tries not to bump into anyone and she's very careful with her passing."

Friends at the Duncan home in Aurora said the family was devastated. The girl's parents and two siblings were in attendance at the Grand Junction track when the accident happened.

An investigation into the collision is underway.
